First Aid Kits

First aid kits are good to have in your house or to take with you on trips. You can buy pre-made first aid kits or make your own--but really think about what you should put in it if you do that.

Have Your First Aid Kits Handy And Accessible

Most of us don't have official first aid kits in our homes, be they makeshift kits or more official ones.

Some of you might have makeshift first aid kits that include triple antibiotic ointment, bandages and maybe hydrocortisone cream and hydrogen peroxide. If this is you, you might want to go ahead and check out the variety of first aid kits that are available.

Pre-made first aid kits are the way to go!

The advantage to most pre-made kits is that they usually come with things you might not think you'll ever need. And you may not. But the last thing you want is to have some sort of medical emergency where you need something and don't have it. After all, if we could plan our emergencies, they wouldn't really be emergencies. This is why we have first aid kits. We'd know what was going to happen and be prepared. first aid kits help you prepare for the unknown.

Most pre-made first aid kits come equipped with your basics, like triple antibiotic ointment, bandages and hydrocortisone cream, but they come with far more than that. Here's a brief list of what you might find inside, depending on the size of the first aid kit you buy:

Of course, you can also make your own first aid kit.

This way, you can tailor it to the specific needs of your family. You can create a lot of child safety products yourself if you give it some thought and effort. Got an asthmatic in the family? Stock your first aid kit with an emergency inhaler for that person. Got a diabetic? Keep diabetic supplies on hand (with the exception of insulin that has to be kept refrigerated). Does your family camp a lot? Maybe you want to include calamine lotion or some other medication to control poison ivy or poison oak. And you'll want to include the basics, too. And finally, if you make your own first aid kit, keep it in a waterproof container and out of the reach of small children.

Bottom line: A first aid kit is one of the safety products in our house we think of the least, but it can really be helpful in emergency situations.
