Hurricane Katrina Stories

"We stayed behind in Louisiana because we thought we could ride out Hurricane Katrina. It turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes of our lives. Hurricane Katrina not only flooded our street, but it destroyed our home as well. I thought we were prepared. We took all the hurricane safety precautions we should have, or at least we thought we did. Unfortunately, they weren't enough. Hurricane Katrina ran through our town like a freight train, leaving behind nothing. Now, we have to uproot and move, but we don't know to where. We have family in New York, but no way to get there. Everything was lost in Hurricane Katrina. It was one of the worst hurricanes I've ever experienced. Our town is now vacant. Nothing is left behind but death, destruction and the animals have come out of the bayou and taken over because of all the flooding. We have to rebuild everything and start from scratch. It will be difficult, but it's something we have to do. Hopefully we can get our lives back on track. But no matter what happens, we'll remember Katrina as the hurricane that took everything away from us."Denise

"Not only did we lose our home, but we were afraid we lost our children. We could not find them for three days after the storm. A big wave ran through our house and washed them away as we tried to hold on. Of all the 2005 hurricanes, Hurricane Katrina was the least forgiving, knocking everything down in sight. Nothing is left standing in our neighborhood. Everything is leveled. We had to get out of there because if we stayed we knew we were going to die. It's gonna be a long ride on this road to rebuilding. But we'll do our best."Margaret

Stories like these really hit home and remind us that there is no one who is immune to natural disasters. The best thing we can all do is to be prepared and have the things that we might need in our home before the storm strikes. Now we are looking at meeting another lady next week by the name of Hurricane Wilma, don't let her too catch you unprepared.
