Bedroom Safety

We all retire to our bedrooms at the end of every day to relax, sleep and recharge our batteries. Thus, our bedrooms must be hazard free, safe and secure zones in our homes. With the recent onslaught of hurricanes, the issues of bedroom safety and general home safety have come to the forefront.

Bedroom safety for children

Night time maybe the only part of the day where our children are alone in their bedrooms, unattended. Sure, there are responsible adults in the house, but those responsible adults will spend the majority of the night in a sleep filled slumber. So it is imperative that we deal with the issue of bedroom safety in our homes.

Make sure that windows are secure and locked if possible
Make sure that there is no danger of wandering little ones falling down the stairs, put up and use a stair gate.
Don't overload sockets as this is a fire risk
Don't lock bedroom doors. If there is a fire you or your children may fall unconscious and not be able to unlock the door
Don't put your or your children's beds directly next to a window if you live in a hurricane zone
Keep bedrooms a clutter free zone to avoid any accidents

Bedroom safety during a hurricane or tropical storm

Many storms and hurricanes come at night when we may be sleeping. The issue of bedroom safety and indeed bathroom safety is extremely important as we may be confined to these two rooms during a storm. If a storm or hurricane is headed your way you may want your children in with you. This can be an extremely scary time for everyone, especially children and pets. It is important to be prepared by having a 'safe' area or room that you can go to during a storm. Ideally this should be an interior room or closet with no windows. Make sure that you have your storm supplies with you. It may be too dangerous to retrieve them from another part of the house during a storm. You should also have a battery operated flashlight and radio to stay informed.

As we spend so much time in our bedrooms, bedroom safety is a very important issue and must be taken seriously. When it comes to our children we must stay informed on bedroom safety and follow the guidelines, they are there to keep us all safe.
