Bathroom Safety

When dealing with the issue of home safety we must not forget bathroom safety. Some of us spend more time in the bathroom than others. Often it is hard to herd our kids into the bathroom to wash and brush their teeth. With teenagers however it may be hard to get a look in as they occupy the bathroom for hours doing goodness knows what!

To ensure that your bathroom is safe we have put together a bathroom safety tip list. Even if you don't have children, you should familiarize yourself with some bathroom safety tips in case you have any little visitors.

Bathroom safety for children

Our children may often spend time in the bathroom unattended. For this reason it is important to follow a set of well-researched bathroom safety guidelines. Here are some important bathroom safety to bear in mind:

Make sure that all sharp objects (i.e. razors) are out of reach. Some children are pretty good at climbing so make sure that they really are completely out of reach. This may mean installing a cabinet that can be locked.
Make sure that all forms of medication are also out of reach in a locked cabinet. Just because medications are in 'child-proof' containers, does not mean that your children will not find a way to prize them open.
Your bathroom must be a clean zone. Children touch everything so part of bathroom safety is keeping the germs out by frequent and thorough cleaning, you don't have to go crazy here but just make sure that you keep on top of cleanliness in you bathroom.
Educate your children on bathroom safety as well as kitchen safety and bedroom safety. Make sure your children understand why you are giving them the information.
Keep cosmetics, creams and soaps out of reach. Your children may be tempted to consume the contents of a shampoo bottle, avoid this by keeping them out of reach.
Make sure that there are no plastic bags in your bathroom, do not use one in the trash can. A child may seize a bag and this could potentially suffocate a child if placed over the head.
A bathroom trash can may be filled with potentially dangerous objects for a child. If you must keep a trash can in your bathroom make sure you empty it regularly and don't discard razors or other sharp objects in to the trash can.

We want our homes to be a safe and secure environments for our children, we are responsible for making our homes safe so it is important to educate ourselves and follow recommendations.
